5 Metrics Every Trader Should Track
TradeRitual

"What gets measured gets managed." - Peter Drucker
Most traders track their P&L obsessively while ignoring the metrics that actually predict long-term success. They celebrate high win rates while bleeding money, or panic over losing streaks that are statistically normal.
Let's fix that.
The Problem with Common Metrics
Win Rate Alone Is Meaningless
A 90% win rate sounds incredible until you realize:
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ TRADER A: 90% Win Rate │
│ ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────── │
│ 9 wins × $100 = $900 │
│ 1 loss × $1,000 = -$1,000 │
│ ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────── │
│ NET RESULT: -$100 (LOSING MONEY!) │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ TRADER B: 40% Win Rate │
│ ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────── │
│ 4 wins × $500 = $2,000 │
│ 6 losses × $200 = -$1,200 │
│ ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────── │
│ NET RESULT: +$800 (PROFITABLE!) │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The lesson: Win rate without context is dangerous.
P&L Doesn't Tell the Full Story
Your P&L today could be:
- Skill + Edge = Sustainable
- Luck + Risk = Inevitable Blowup
Without deeper metrics, you can't tell the difference until it's too late.
The 5 Metrics That Actually Matter
Metric #1: Profit Factor
What it is: Gross Profits ÷ Gross Losses
Why it matters: Tells you how much you make for every dollar you lose.
PROFIT FACTOR INTERPRETATION:
< 1.0 ──► Losing system (fix it or stop trading it)
1.0-1.5 ──► Marginal (barely covering costs)
1.5-2.0 ──► Solid edge (sustainable with discipline)
2.0-3.0 ──► Strong edge (excellent system)
> 3.0 ──► Exceptional (verify it's not luck)
Example calculation:
| Trade | Result |
|---|---|
| 1 | +$500 |
| 2 | -$200 |
| 3 | +$300 |
| 4 | -$150 |
| 5 | +$400 |
| 6 | -$250 |
Gross Profits: $500 + $300 + $400 = $1,200 Gross Losses: $200 + $150 + $250 = $600
Profit Factor = $1,200 ÷ $600 = 2.0 (Strong edge!)

Metric #2: Risk-Reward Ratio (R:R)
What it is: Average Win Size ÷ Average Loss Size
Why it matters: Determines what win rate you NEED to be profitable.
MINIMUM WIN RATE NEEDED BY R:R RATIO:
R:R = 1:1 ──► Need >50% win rate to profit
R:R = 1:2 ──► Need >33% win rate to profit
R:R = 1:3 ──► Need >25% win rate to profit
R:R = 1:4 ──► Need >20% win rate to profit
The Math:
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ │
│ Breakeven Win Rate = 1 / (1 + R:R) │
│ │
│ Example: R:R of 1:2 │
│ Breakeven = 1 / (1 + 2) = 1/3 = 33% │
│ │
│ Meaning: With 1:2 R:R, you only need to win │
│ 34% of your trades to make money! │
│ │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Pro tip: Many successful traders accept LOW win rates (40-50%) in exchange for HIGH R:R (1:3 or better). This is psychologically harder but mathematically superior.
In TradeRitual: Displayed as "Avg R:R" in Analytics
Metric #3: Expectancy (Expected Value per Trade)
What it is: The average amount you expect to make per trade over time.
Formula:
Expectancy = (Win Rate × Average Win) - (Loss Rate × Average Loss)
Why it matters: This is your actual edge quantified in dollars.
Example:
Win Rate: 55%
Average Win: $400
Loss Rate: 45%
Average Loss: $250
Expectancy = (0.55 × $400) - (0.45 × $250)
= $220 - $112.50
= $107.50 per trade
Over 100 trades: 100 × $107.50 = $10,750 expected profit
Expectancy benchmarks:
| Expectancy | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Negative | You have NO edge. Stop trading this system. |
| $0-$50 | Marginal. Commission and slippage may erase it. |
| $50-$200 | Solid edge. Trade it with discipline. |
| $200+ | Strong edge. Optimize position sizing. |

Metric #4: Maximum Drawdown
What it is: The largest peak-to-trough decline in your account.
Why it matters: Tells you the worst period you've survived (and what you should prepare for in the future).
ACCOUNT EQUITY OVER TIME:
$12,000 ─────────────╮ ╭─────────── New High
│ │
$11,000 │ │
│ ╭──────────╯
$10,000 ═════════════╪═════════╪═══════════════════════ Starting
│ │
$9,000 │ ╭────╯
│ │
$8,000 ╰────╯ ◄── Max Drawdown = $4,000 (33%)
Why this matters:
- Psychological test: Can you handle a 20%, 30%, 40% drawdown?
- Survival test: A 50% drawdown requires a 100% gain to recover
- Risk calibration: Your position size should ensure survivable drawdowns
Drawdown recovery math:
| Drawdown | Gain Needed to Recover |
|---|---|
| 10% | 11.1% |
| 20% | 25% |
| 30% | 42.9% |
| 40% | 66.7% |
| 50% | 100% |
| 60% | 150% |
| 70% | 233% |
The lesson: Avoiding large drawdowns is more important than chasing large gains.

Metric #5: Win/Loss Streak Data
What it is: Your longest consecutive wins and losses.
Why it matters: Helps you prepare mentally for normal variance.
Statistical reality check:
With a 50% win rate over 100 trades, you should EXPECT:
- At least one 6+ loss streak
- At least one 6+ win streak
- Multiple 4-5 trade streaks in either direction
PROBABILITY OF CONSECUTIVE LOSSES (50% win rate):
2 in a row: 25% (1 in 4)
3 in a row: 12.5% (1 in 8)
4 in a row: 6.25% (1 in 16)
5 in a row: 3.125% (1 in 32)
6 in a row: 1.56% (1 in 64)
In 100 trades, you have ~65% chance of hitting a 6-loss streak!
Why this matters psychologically:
When you EXPECT losing streaks:
- You don't panic when they happen
- You don't change your system mid-stream
- You don't revenge trade
- You maintain proper position sizing

Metrics Most Traders Ignore (But Shouldn't)
Trade Frequency
Are you over-trading? Under-trading?
Track:
- Trades per day/week/month
- Quality scores per trade
- Best performing days/times
Commission Impact
That $4.95 per trade adds up:
- 100 trades/month × $4.95 = $495/month
- $495 × 12 = $5,940/year
If your expectancy is $100/trade, commissions eat 5% of your edge.
Holding Time
Do your winners last longer than your losers?
- Average winner hold time
- Average loser hold time
- Best hold time for your strategy
Time-Based Performance
When do you trade best?
- Best day of week
- Best time of day
- Worst conditions to avoid
How to Use These Metrics for Improvement
Step 1: Establish Your Baseline
Trade for at least 30-50 trades to get statistically meaningful data. Less than this is noise.
Step 2: Identify Your Weakness
DIAGNOSTIC FLOWCHART:
Losing money?
│
├── Profit Factor < 1.0?
│ └── Your average loss is too big OR wins too small
│ ► Focus on: Cutting losses faster, letting winners run
│
├── Win Rate < Breakeven for your R:R?
│ └── Taking bad setups or poor timing
│ ► Focus on: Setup selection, patience
│
└── Max Drawdown > 30%?
└── Position sizing too aggressive
► Focus on: Reduce risk per trade to 1%
Step 3: Target ONE Metric
Don't try to fix everything at once. Pick your weakest metric and focus there for 30 days.
Step 4: Review Weekly
Every weekend:
- Calculate your metrics
- Compare to previous periods
- Note what changed
- Adjust one thing maximum
Setting Up Metric Tracking in TradeRitual
TradeRitual calculates all these metrics automatically. Here's how to get the most from them:
1. Ensure Complete Data
For accurate metrics, include:
- Entry and exit prices (for P&L)
- Position size (for true risk calculation)
- Commission (for net expectancy)
2. Use Time Filters
Compare metrics across different periods:
- This week vs. last week
- This month vs. last month
- Best month vs. worst month
3. Segment by Strategy
If you trade multiple strategies, track metrics separately:
- Scalping metrics
- Swing trading metrics
- Different setups
4. Export for Deep Analysis
Use CSV export for additional analysis in spreadsheets.
Your Metric-Tracking Action Plan
This Week:
- Calculate your Profit Factor for your last 30 trades
